The Team Process Questionnaire System (TPQS) to Develop Inclusive, High-Performing Teams
This page provides deeper background about the Team Process Questionnaire System (TPQS), a leading-edge set of tools you can apply in team development to help ensure the success of your teams.
Teams, councils, and other intact work groups require effective operating processes to succeed (Team Development with Diverse Teams). TPQS is a set of easy-to-use web-enabled tools that help a team ensure they work together in ways that work well for each and every team member. By helping each member contribute fully to the team’s work, TPQS enables the team to achieve its results and overall success through full inclusion.
TPQS uses input from the team members to identify the teams strengths and important areas of development. This use of team members’ inputs generates credibility. TPQS was developed by our partners at ITAP International.
Key Benefits of TPQS
- Helps a team maximize its Productivity, Innovation, Creativity, Agility, and Safety (the PICAS factors)
- Quantitatively baselines current team operation
- Identifies specific team strengths and developmental needs
- Basis for the team to reflect and achieve its own development
- Provides quantitative progress measures and trends for the team and for leadership
Components of the Team Process Questionnaire System
TPQS has three versions:
- Organizational TPQ (OTPQ), for use by teams located entirely within one country.
- Global TPQ (GTPQ), for use by cross-cultural or global teams.
- Action Learning TPQ (ALTPQ), for intensive action-learning initiatives.
The family has much in common while each version is tailored to its specific application. Each measures the human processes and interactions, or how the members communicate, interact, and work together on the team. TPQS provides a baseline for the team's current mode of operation. The baseline reflects inputs from the team members and allows comparison of team results to industry averages. The baseline data provides a quantitative basis for the team to determine specific adaptations in its work preferences that will enable everyone’s success. TPQS may be used over time to assess and measure progress, and to make further adaptations as needed.
Typical Usage of TPQS
TPQS is a very-flexible system. Each situation tends to have unique aspects for which implementation should be adapted. At a high level, though, most applications will follow this outline:
- Initial baseline so the team leader or a facilitator may engage the team in dialogue, identify strengths and areas of focus, and start its own development.
- Develop appropriate metrics and progress measures.
- Repeat applications over time, typically at three to six month intervals, so the team leader or facilitator can report on the team's progress toward specific process goals and the team may adapt its action plans. Typical areas of focus may include communication, clearer understanding of objectives, roles and responsibilities, or decision making.
- At each step, compare results with benchmarks for teams in the same industry when available. When many teams are involved within one organization, the comparisons may be across these teams to identify internal best practices.
TPQS Reports
TPQS reports emphasize quantified, actionable information. Charts are used extensively to convey clear diagnoses and analyses, and facilitate action planning. The chart below shows a typical diagnosis based on team members’ responses.

The diagnosis highlights various aspects of the team’s operating processes and the extent to which there is agreement or disagreement about how well the team is working. This provides one basis for the team to decide on changes that will increase its performance.
More detailed analyses are contained in spider and trend charts such as the following:

These charts add precision to the team’s development decisions and show its progress over time. The charts also serve as excellent components of executive reports and scorecards.
